Colchester Youth League Under 11s 1-1 Chelmsford Youth League Under 11s, Anglia Inter Counties East Anglia Youth Inter League Competition, Sunday 24th January 2005, Stanway Rovers F.C.

As the score-line suggests, this was a very tense, very tight game.

The first fifteen minutes was a real cat-and mouse affair but then Chelmsford finally came to life and enjoyed a good five minute spell creating two excellent chances.  First a deep cross from Jordan Galloway was misjudged by the Colchester  central defender and  Michael Smith was inches away from steering it over the stranded goalkeeper as he chased the pass through. Then,  a neat  move involving James Bowyer and Morgan Fox  down the left released Joe Scott. He turned his defender then bore in towards goal and his near-post cross was only half cleared to George Crocker on the edge of the penalty are. He made space for a  fierce shot  but it flew just wide of the post. After those two near misses Colchester came into the game and had most of the possession for the remainder of the half but solid defending confined them mostly  to a few long shots which were easily dealt with by the Chelmsford goalkeeper.

Colchester used the slope to their advantage in the second half and put  the Chelmsford defence under a lot of pressure early on. Ten minutes into the game the pressure told and a loose clearance in the right channel was seized upon and duly despatched into  the far corner to give Colchester a 1-0 lead. This finally stung Chelmsford into action and they enjoyed easily their best spell of normal time. Using the width to their advantage they bombarded the Colchester goal and three corners in succession eventually brought their reward. A snap shot from eight yards beat the Colchester  keeper but was instinctively saved by a defender on the line. The unfortunate Colchester defender was shown the red card  and the penalty was expertly placed just inside the keeper's left hand post  by Morgan Fox for the equaliser.  Chelmsford piled on the pressure but Colchester defended stoutly for the last ten minutes to send the game into extra time.

The expansive heavy pitch had taken it's toll on both sets of players in normal time. Chelmsford did push forward using their extra man to good effect and they almost got the winning goal with a minute of time remaining but the goal-bound shot was cleared off the line.

And so to penalties. The Chelmsford keeper dived the right way  and almost got to all four of the spot-kicks that  Colchester took but ultimately they scored four whilst two of our boys unfortunately missed theirs.
