Corringham Athletic 3-1 Thurrock (Essex Cordell Under 13s Cup Supported by Tesco Final, Sunday 26th March 2006, Great Wakering Rovers F.C.) By Rob Craven Chelmsford Youth League's Corringham Athletic will have the chance to become Essex’s inaugural representatives at Tesco’s national Under 13s competition final after a 3-1 win over Thurrock in the Cordell Cup on Sunday. Corringham did start the brighter of the two sides, with Hooper and fellow front man Adetokumbo ‘Toks’ Oredein posing constant problems for the Echo Junior Football League side. Hooper had fired into the side-netting and Lewis Williams had hit the top of the crossbar before Thurrock took the lead. On 17 minutes, James Talbot curled a left-wing free-kick in towards the near post, where Joe McBurney attempted to touch the ball in. His attempted flick wrong-footed Conor Harrold, and the ball bounced into the bottom right-hand corner. Athletic’s eventual success against local rivals Thurrock looked unlikely until Bradley Hooper curled a magnificent free-kick from just outside the penalty area over the wall and into the net via the underside of the crossbar on the half-hour mark to level the scores. Hooper’s equaliser changed the complexion of the tie, although James’ low shot had to be scooped off of the line by Ryan Plom. The midfielder was soon in action at the other end, heading home from Oredein’s left-wing corner to give Corringham the lead. Conor Mead headed Jamie Mathews’ flag-kick from the opposite side just over the bar, but Oredein sealed the win with a low shot after Plom’s stylish through-ball. There were further chances for Corringham to score, Hooper chipping a bobbling ball just past the right-hand post and Talbot twice clearing off of the goal line in a frantic finish. Corringham coach Darren Anderson was “over the moon” as his side became just the third team to win the competition. “I wasn’t worried at all, even though it was a pretty even game. We deserved to go in 1-1 at half-time, but we restricted them to only one shot on target, and my goalkeeper didn’t have anything to do in the second half.” “I was really impressed with Ben Sampayo for Thurrock – he dealt with out forwards really well. They were still in it at 3-1 if they had got one back, but it was a comfortable win in the second half. It was a complete team effort, but I would like to praise Jake Pooley and Ryan Plom in particular,” he concluded. Corringham Athletic: Conor Harrold, Ashley Halcron, Conor Mead, Kieran Record, Lewis Williams, Ryan Plom, Jamie Mathews, Billy Anderson, Jake Pooley, Adetokumbo Oredein, Bradley Hooper. Substitutes: Conor Smith, Lee Broadhurst. Goals: Hooper (30), Plom (44), Oredein (56). |
